Mathias has served as owner of Play It Again Sports for the past 22 years and has been a Tennis Professional for over 25 years at various clubs across the Southeast in the states of North Carolina, Virginia and Florida. His longest tenure as a pro came at the Sherwood Swim & Racquet Club in Greensboro, N.C., from 1983 to 1993.

Individually, Mathias has coached professional tennis player Jane Preyer and two nationally-ranked collegiate players in Stephen Enochs (Geogia) and Andy Avram (Wake Forest).

For four years, Mathias was Guilford College's Head Men's Tennis Coach (1988-91) and played four years at Wake Forest University

As an intercollegiate player, Mathias won the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship at No. 5 singles and No. 2 doubles and earned team Most Valuable Player honors in 1972. That same season, the Demon Deacons finished second in the ACC standings and Mathias was crowned the Big Four Champion.

Mathias graduated from Wake Forest University in 1974 with a bachelor's degree in psychology.

Mathias and his wife, Anne, are the proud parents of one daughter: Helen.
